24/02/2021 - A winter tench
A fine winter tench
Dave Hurst of central Lancashire this week decided he would travel to his local water to see if the tench were likely to feed. I personally felt there was a good chance, having myself over many years going back to the 1950’s I have caught many winter tench from both still waters and slow moving rivers during a period of mild weather. As is often the case with winter tench, in fact with many still water species, often using small baits is the answer. David had got it spot on, using quiver tip rod double red gentles fished around 40 yards out in around 4 feet of water. It was his only bite of the day a fine fish estimated between 4.5 lbs and 5 lbs in weight. Certainly a well-deserved fish in winter.
