28/07/2026 - On The River Soar

Recently Tam Miller his son Zac myself and Mark Sarul, enjoyed our first visit of the season on the River Soar, though the river was low and gin clear, it was great to be back on the river. Tam had booked some excellent self catering accommodation, far better than any hotel room plus the service from Tam was five star.

We started off the day at the local caf'e for breakfast, then it was off to the local supermarket, then to the river.

As I walked across the field I was surprised and amazed at the large number of Crickets and Grasshopper's it was wonderful to see a lot of Purple-loosestrife along with many bees. As usual there were a lot of bullrushes, often covering the river, often stretching some fifty feet, I find in the areas of bullrushes you will find perch and chub.

Mark was off the mark within ten minutes catching a chub on a popped up boilie weighing in at 4lb 6 ounces. sadly Marks only bite of the day, it was certainly hard fishing. On the first day I managed three chub all around the 3lb mark caught on legered crust, later in the day from one of the bullrush swims. Meanwhile Zac who was spinning for pike caught two nice fish, Tam had several perch on a worm bait, including a 4lb chub. On the last day I chose to fish luncheon meat on a size 4 barbless hook and was lucky to get a 4lb chub, also a couple of 3lb fish 3lbs fish.
