02/06/2025 - Angling Trust calls for Thames Water's £123m fine to be used for restoring rivers

The Angling Trust has called on the government to use fines totalling £123m imposed on Thames Water to clean up our rivers via the Water Restoration Fund.

Thames Water was hit with a record £104m fine over environmental breaches involving sewage spills, after failing to operate and manage its treatment works and wastewater networks effectively. They were also fined over £18m for breaking dividend rules, the first of its kind in the industry.

Stuart Singleton-White, Angling Trust's Head of Campaigns, said: "The fine of £123m levied on Thames Water by OFWAT brings further shame on this failing company. This is a company that has, for too long, got away with deliberately polluting our water while handing huge dividends to its parent company and big bonuses to its senior managers. £104m of that fine is for the deliberate damage Thames Water visited on our environment. We call on the government to use that money to invest in cleaning up our rivers via the Water Restoration Fund.”
