The Piscatorial Raconteurs & Friends Invitational Day,
Pitmire, Suffolk Stour, 12thJuly 2025 By Carl Hier
The first view of the river showed steam rising off the water as the sun broke through the trees, whilst a blackcap and wren competed for the loudest ‘good morning’ greeting.
Rob Burt (RBT), Carl Hier, David and Ruth Craine, Rob Greer, Peter Allen-Jones and Ian Perryman were the day’s participants.
The weather continued the trend of recent weeks with early morning bright, warm sunshine being maintained through the day. Afternoon temperatures near to 30 degrees and some paddle boarding traffic increased the challenge for all those pursuing fish, with the river not surprisingly running low and clear.
Brunch was expertly prepared and served by RBT - a ten out of ten culinary experience from the back of his Land Rover, with Kentish Spitfire Ale provided to assist the digestive process.
Cake and biscuits from David and Ruth, Ian’s sausage rolls and welsh cakes from Carl all helped to provide first class sustenance, enhancing the day and making it another memorable Pitmire experience.
With David showing several of his exquisite nets and Rob G sharing some fine hand-made bookmarks the day was bolstered by some beautiful craftsmanship.
The fishing was almost of secondary importance but the very early start for RBT paid dividends with the biggest fish of the day, a chub of over 3lb.
Small chub, perch, roach and dace were all enticed by others through the day, with special mention to Ian for the many gudgeon he persuaded to take his bait.
Specific thanks to Phil Humm for his many months of hard work. Firstly creating access to many optional swims, secondly enhancing the overall quality of the Pitmire fishery and finally for organising the day and making it happen.
Good company, good conversation and great food made for a very enjoyable day.
The river and surrounding area was truly alive and showed itself off to everyone who had the privilege of gracing its banks.
Multiple fly pasts from the resident kingfishers, dragonflies swooped and hovered, damselflies danced alongside us all day. Red admiral, cabbage white and comma butterflies enjoyed the fruits of the plum tree. Warblers feasted on the elderberries, green woodpeckers called to each other and white egrets also paid a visit.
If there is a more beautiful place on earth, I am yet to see it. It is a privilege to spend time in the company of its flora and fauna and a blessing indeed if one is lucky enough to be graced by the presence of any of it’s fine fish.
