22/12/2025 - It Was A Tough Cold Day On The River
It was around 1300 hrs when Robin and I arrived on the riverbank, I was surprised how cold it was in the South Easterly wind, checking the water temperature I found it was 43 degrees F, a drop of 4 degrees F from the day before. This afternoon Robin , who is not only a keen angler, but he is also one of those who has experienced the Sturgeon fishing on the Frazer river in Canada, a venue where his son caught a huge fish, Robin is also a keen shot. A few weeks ago Robin joined me on a bank high river, I didn't fish, but put Robin in a swim, I thought would produce a good fish, using a big chunk of meat he eventually did hook a good fish, for several minutes it was in favour of the fish, as Robin gained some line, only for the fish, to take back line, After several minutes, the fish was losing the fight, soon Robin had the fish in some quiet water, I was ready with the landing net, about six feet from the net the fish dived into some submerged reeds, within seconds it as off. I felt sorry for Robin that day, but that's angling.
Today we fished three swims, in the first two swims, we didn't have any interest from the fish, eventually with an hour to go, I suggested "We go and fish a swim just downstream of the wood, where a stream flowed into the river." fifteen minutes later, we started fishing, within twenty minutes, Robin got a slight pull on the rod tip, then a second pull, lifting the rod, he set the hook into a fish, which put up a good fight for several minutes eventually, I got a chub in the net, Saying "That's a good 3lb fish", on the scales it weighed 3 lbs 15 ounces, I was well pleased for Robin, who had a grin mile wide, as you can see in the photograph. As dusk was falling, we sadly had to leave otherwise I reckon Robin would have perhaps caught more chub. During the coming week, he will be fishing the river Wyre, with falling water temperatures I suggested he switch to bread crust on short link.
