12/05/2014 - Prince Albert Angling Society Ribble Open Day

The Northern Area Liaison Committee invites all Members and guests to attend the PAAS open day on the 8th June 2014, between 09.30am to 4pm at the Post Office stretch on the River Ribble at Ribchester

This year will be the 12th anniversary of the PAAS open day.

We know it’s a sign of age but it only seems like five minutes since we penned these notes last year. Well here we are again for the umpteenth year now and getting even bigger and hopefully better. This event has grown annually since its inception back in the late ninety’s and continues to do so, this year will be no exception. Encouraged by the many kind comments from people who attended last year and spurred on by the PAAS Committee this event is to take another step forward this year and we need as many of you to attend as possible. Take note entry is “Free” yes “Free” to all PAAS members and their guests.

Martin James MBE our vice-president will open the proceedings with a welcoming speech.

The event has been extended to include even more game and coarse fishing practical instruction, fly tying, the ever-popular Bring and Buy stall, as well as the original fly-casting instruction. The casting instructors this year will include Alan Roe, Bill Pennington, Karl Humphreys, Brian Warrington, Neil Truelove, Geoff Littler and Stuart Ray, just go to the AAPGAI table and take your pick. All will be available to iron out any casting faults or to help total beginners so make use of them, as normally they would charge a small ransom.

Brian Warrington will be demonstrating with the double handed rod and once again Karl Humphreys will be giving a running commentary. This year we will have Illtyd Griffiths a sea-trout guru from the river Dyfi to talk about tackle and tactics for catching those elusive sea-trout. In the afternoon Karl and Brian with commentary from Neil will be giving a joint demonstration which although being a bit of fun can also be very informative. Alan Roe will be demonstrating the Wallace cast with a center pin, so please come down and have a go. Karl will be giving a talk on safe wading including the best wading sticks what to do with your net when wading and what to do when it goes wrong.

Steve Beech will be giving a talk on how to catch barbel; Steve’s talks and demonstrations are always very popular.

Demonstrations will be going on throughout the day and will be as varied as Barbel fishing, Pike fishing, spinner making and fly tying. Back again this year will be a display of antique tackle supplied by Steve Carney who will be available to value your old tackle should you bring any along. Just like the antique's road show!

Ribble conservation trust, AAPGAI, The Barbel Society, The Lure Anglers Club and the Angling Trust, will all have a stand and I am sure they would be happy to discuss any queries.

Incidentally food will be available on site, so you shouldn’t go hungry.

By the way I should reiterate the most important bit it’s all going to be “Free”! Yes, free entry, free parking, free casting and fly tying instruction, free practical fishing instruction and much, much more, what more can we say. So whether you want to improve your casting, fly tying, game or coarse fishing skills or simply want to sell some tackle surplus to your needs or buy someone else’s. Then come along and have a free day out courtesy of Prince Albert’s Management committee and the Northern Area Liaison Committee, and remember, this is an open day so bring a friend, the more the merrier. Members of both committees will be on hand to discuss any queries throughout the day.
